We cannot express how grateful we are for every single dollar that is raised to help pay off the tremendous amount of medical debt that comes with fighting this unwelcome beast known as cancer. As Marty says, he has issued an EVICTION NOTICE to his cancer, and we are blessed to have you join his Team in this process.
The journey begins:
In mid-January, on his way back from doing chores in the Rabbit Barn, Marty fell on some black ice. In late January, just before PaSarba, Marty was sent for multiple x-rays and CT scans, only to be told that there was nothing broken, but the pain remained.
Upon returning from the PaSarba show in February, we just knew something was seriously wrong, and we went looking for more answers. Finally, in March, after multiple trips to several doctors, Marty's Rheumatologist discovered that Marty had fractured his hip in 2 places, but that wasn't all.... he also had 6 pathological fractures of his ribs that were a result of multiple bone lesions, as well as a large sacral mass, which were all an indication of metastases from an unknown cancer origin.
After two bone biopsies, more x-rays, CT scans, and finally a PET scan, Marty was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer that has spread to his brain, skull, sacrum (tailbone area) as well as to multiple bones - from the top of his head to the bottom of his knee.
Initially, pain management was the first step in Marty's treatment plan. The amount of pain Marty was experiencing was debilitating. His Palliative Care Team has been phenomenal, and has finally found a pain management plan that is effective and given Marty back a quality of life that allows him to walk and move as normal as he can, considering his condition.
The journey continues:
In May, Marty underwent radiation therapy for the metastases on his skull, 12+ lesions in his brain, for his fractured hip, as well as for the large tumor that was on his sacral area. Once done with radiation, he started a regiment of treatment that has included 2 different chemotherapy drugs, a drug to help stimulate Marty's bone & marrow growth, immunological therapy and injections to increase his white blood cell count.
Marty has proven to be allergic to 3 of the drugs that were being used to treat his cancer, which presented as severe allergic reactions - one happening on his Birthday! After several adjustments to his cancer treatment drugs & schedule, he is finally on a course of Double-Chemo treatments every three weeks.
His body's response:
We are happy to say that the prayers and thoughts of SO MANY people are being answered. Marty's cancer is starting to respond to his treatments, and while they will not be able to cure Marty, they feel confident that treatments will give him several years to live his life to the fullest.
Marty's future:
If you've met Marty, then you know he's a FIGHTER!!! He will tell you that he has a LOT of life yet to live, and he's not going to give up without giving this fight everything he's got.
- He not only wants to be a grandfather (one day), but he looks forward to impacting the lives of his grandchildren.
- He continues to "do his magic" in the rabbit barn, and looks forward to the chance to continue to help improve the Polish breed.
- Marty continues to invest in the lives of so many people in the rabbit hobby; especially the youth. He looks forward, with joy, to sharing his knowledge about the breed with others.
- Jody is determined to get Marty on an airplane one day - perhaps a flight to Reno in 2026? - and together, they are planning to forge ahead into this crazy life they've built together over 35+ years. They have many adventures left....
